2025 SPEAKERS
Melinda Bell is an employment and labour lawyer based in Melbourne.
Melinda has over 15 years' experience providing strategic and practical advice on a range of employment and industrial relations law issues for clients in the public and private sectors. Her advice covers general employment law, commercial transactions, enterprise bargaining and industrial relations, underpayments issues and investigations.
Among Melinda's clients are international and domestic organisations that are active in Australia. She has advised US and European companies conducting mergers and acquisitions in Australia, as well as transactions in the financial services, government, construction, real estate, retail and franchising sectors. She also regularly represents clients and advises on unfair dismissal, general protections and industrial dispute matters at the Fair Work Commission.
Peter advises clients in relation to all aspects of industrial relations and employment law. Peter regularly advises public and private sector clients in relation to industrial matters including enterprise bargaining, the drafting and interpretation of industrial instruments, industrial disputes, industrial action and managing workplace change.
Peter also advises on a range of individual employee issues, including misconduct, performance management, redundancy, unfair dismissal claims, general protections disputes and discrimination complaints.
Peter regularly appears for clients in courts and tribunals across Australia, including in the Fair Work Commission, Federal Circuit Court and the Federal Court. Peter also provides workplace training to clients on topics including effective performance management, social media, industrial relations in the workplace, workplace investigations and advocacy.
Claire is a highly experienced employment and industrial relations lawyer, with particular expertise in day-to-day employee relations and associated litigation, enterprise bargaining, industrial disputes, workplace conduct matters and complex investigations. Having spent the first 14 years of her career in operational human resources and industrial relations roles, Claire is uniquely placed to understand the daily challenges faced by human resources practitioners. She enjoys building strong relationships with her clients, and through those connections she attains a deep understanding of their particular challenges.
Claire’s client base ranges from large multi-national organisations to smaller employers across an array of industries, with particular expertise in the higher education and health care sectors. She regularly delivers training on topics such as Respect@Work obligations and measures to ensure a safe and respectful workplace, including how to conduct internal investigations and bystander training.
Based in Melbourne, Claire travels across Australia to assist clients on the ground and regularly appears in the Fair Work Commission, State and Federal anti-discrimination tribunals and State and Federal Courts.
Claire is a member of Victorian Women Lawyers and has been an active member of the Industrial Relations Society of Victoria for more than 15 years, and was part of the Executive Committee of the Society for a number of years.
Persephone is an employment law specialist and litigator with a breadth of expertise advising and acting for clients in relation to the full spectrum of workplace issues including sensitive exits, contracts and executive level service agreements, workplace disputes and complaint handling, investigations, performance management, harassment and bullying to name a few. Persephone’s background and skills also extend to award interpretation, enterprise bargaining and industrial disputes.
Persephone provides practical, innovative and tailored solutions allowing her clients to protect their assets and grow their business. Persephone represents private and public sector clients across an array of industry sectors including banking, legal, insurance, professional services, transport, education and not-for-profit. Persephone’s practice spans regular appearances in industrial and superior courts, workforce training and the provision of strategic and complex advice to directors, executives, managers and human resource advisors.
Chuck is a seasoned leader with over 25 years of professional experience. His focus is in mental health, psychosocial risk, psychological safety and has a background in psychology and risk management. He specialises in building safe, inclusive, and high-performing workplace cultures through evidence-based programs and trauma-informed practices. Across corporate, government, and non-profit sectors, Chuck has designed and delivered national wellbeing frameworks, resilience training, and lived-experience initiatives that have supported thousands of employees.
Before transitioning into wellbeing leadership, Chuck spent seven years in U.S. Defence supporting highly classified operations, then continued his work as a civilian in high-threat environments across Washington, D.C. He supported agencies including the NSA, CIA, DHS, and the White House—leading investigations, assessing threats, and safeguarding staff in some of the most sensitive and complex security settings in the world.
As a freelance wellbeing columnist, Chuck has interviewed and explored the work of renowned experts including Harvard’s Dr. Amy Edmondson, who introduced psychological safety in 1999; Professor Ellen Langer, the mother of mindfulness; and Dr. Kristin Neff, the world’s leading authority on the scientific study of self-compassion.
Chuck is known for his strategic thinking, authentic leadership, creative problem solving and ability to turn psychological safety from policy into daily practice.
He lives in Manly Beach with his partner Eric , is an avid reader, a published poet and runs a local mens mental health group.
Catherine is one of Australia's leading lawyers working with clients on work health and safety (WHS), behavioural investigations and inquests, inquiries and Royal Commissions. She advises on all aspects of safety regulation and in responding to workplace incidents and criminal prosecutions.
Catherine leads the Maddocks safety practice and works with clients in the public sector, emergency services, police, defence, health, retail, construction, not-for-profit and transport sectors. She proactively works with her clients to address safety risks and develop safety systems and management reporting. She has particular experience in developing bespoke contractor management systems. Catherine has extensive experience in helping clients with employee mental health, safety and well-being issues and in addressing psychosocial hazards. She has assisted large clients in dealing with systemic bullying and sexual harassment issues and has assisted them in investigations into high-profile investigations.
Catherine has helped many clients deal with the aftermath of serious incidents and fatalities, including acting in Australia’s largest natural disaster Royal Commission and in many multiple-fatality and major public safety coronial inquests and inquiries. She works with clients on dealing with regulators and developing a strategic response to prosecutions, inquiries and inquests, considering the interests of stakeholders, liability issues and very real human issues. She provides a 24-7 service to clients who know her for her calm, efficient and measured approach in a crisis.
Catherine is a Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne, teaching workplace health and safety in the Masters programme. She is an in-demand speaker for industry events and frequently presents to Boards and Senior Executives on their due diligence obligations, assurance in their organisations and safety systems and developments in safety law.
